Derek Batty - Profile
Derek Batty studied Fine Art at Edinburgh University and moved
to Cambridge in 1980. He first specialised in portrait and figure
sculpture and copies of commissions can be seen in his studio. More
recently he has
concentrated on painting and life drawing; he teaches adults in
two long-running art classes at Parkside College and Buchan Street
Neighbourhood Centre, Cambridge. In addition he is a painting tutor
at Cambridge Arts and Sciences College.
Volatile shadows of rowers in colour are at the centre of this
online exhibition. Scenes from rowing races on the Cam are the creative
inspiration for images combining colourful figures, water reflections
and indigo skies. Quick sketches were made in pastel by the river
in all weathers. Extremes of snow, cold and wet often provided the
most telling stimulii of light, gesture and emotion. Later in the
studio, with additional reference from models and photographs, pictures
were worked up in casual watercolour to create a moment of observation.
