Stephen Murfitt - Profile Stephen's work is primarily concerned with form. Since leaving college he has experimented with the Raku firing process. This produces an infinite range of possibilities for rich and varied surfaces. Each piece starts on the wheel and is then developed using various hand-building methods. He usually works on 4 - 6 pieces simultaneously and therefore variations on forms gradually evolve. After an initial bisque firing, layers of glaze are brushed on to create more depth in the surface. At the Raku firing stage the pots are sometimes put through the kiln two or even three times to achieve the desired effect. His work has been exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally and is held in many collections. His work is stocked by top London galleries. In print, his 'The Glaze Book' was published by Thames & Hudson in 2002. For many uears he has been a Professional Member of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain and A Selected Member of the East Anglian Potters Association.
