Geoff Marsters - Profile
Geoff works in oil, acrylic, watercolour and pastel. The origin of his painting is always in direct contact with the subject, usually landscape. He makes many drawings which he finds invaluable; for example exploring the natural rhythms and structures of landscape, thinking into it compositionally and absorbing something of its light, colours and atmosphere.
Painting is never only 'transcription': it is always 'translation'. A painting must have its own cohesive unity in terms of the medium used, i.e. a transformation from the seen and experienced into a visual statement in paint.
In this process 'truth' to a subject remains vital. But so also are the abstract visual qualities and the nature of the medium, where the liveliness and 'feel' of the painted surface, the immediacy and vitality of the brushwork remain an essential part of the structure.
